New Southgate
Jerome K. Jerome said of Three Men in a Boat: ‘The world has been kind to this book.’ And no wonder, for since it was published in 1889, the rowing adventures on the Thames of the author, George, Harris, not to forget Montmorency the dog, have delighted and amused each generation of readers.
Full of innocent larks by today’s standards and so much the better for it, it evokes the assured atmosphere of the late Victorian age, when the English knew their place in the world (i.e. on top) in a world of moustaches, bicycling, well-filled pies, cricket and tranquil Sunday afternoons on the river.
Never out of print, this is one of those accidental masterpieces – Jerome did not intend to write a comic novel – that emerges from nowhere and find its place in the hearts of readers worldwide.
